Nov 20 — Today Councilor Lydia Edwards of the Boston City Council issued a statement declaring that she would lead a transit benefit ordinance in 2020. Transit benefit ordinances are effective tools that increase transit ridership and reduce drive-alone rates. These ordinances are also business friendly as they reduce the amount of parking that employers need, improve employee productivity, and provide a payroll tax savings. Below is a statement from CoaST policy Director Jason Pavluchuk:
We thank Councilor Edwards for her leadership and pledge to work with her to see this policy enacted into law. We embrace the Councilor’s statement, our nation’s transportation policy must include better transportation policy. Transit benefit ordinances are a small piece of the puzzle, but they pack an important punch. We look forward to working with the Councilor and the City of Boston on this policy”
